A REPORTAGE, which involves the precise documentation of facts and places identifiable in time and space, sometimes loses its essential narrative component — the one that should remain alive.
On the other hand, a PHOTO STORY goes beyond documentation and finds its purpose in storytelling. It doesn’t need a historical or geographical setting, because it lives within the observer’s sensitivity.
The story goes beyond a simple series of photographs bound by a theme or subject: it is a sequence that connects the images in a meaningful flow, where each photo retains its own strength but is elevated through its connection to the others.

Goals
The online Masterclass “Reportage & Storytelling”, led by photojournalist Gabriele Orlini, is a journey dedicated to the mindful construction of a photographic narrative.
It offers tools and a method to:
- ideare e sviluppare una storia;
- transform an experience into a visual narrative;
- recognize the differences between reportage and storytelling;
- select images that are functional to the narrative.
Through exercises, discussion, and analysis, participants will learn to think about visual storytelling, from idea to planning to realising their projects.
The Masterclass is aimed at the preparation and subsequent realisation of a personal photographic narrative project.
Structure
The Masterclass is composed of 5 lessons:
- 4 group meetings (2 hours each)
- 1 individual meeting (1 hour per participant)
It develops through a constant sharing of dialogues and thoughts, allowing participants to create their own path, according to their inclinations.
LESSON 1 – The foundations of Reportage and Short Story are laid through the example of published works. We work on developing the Idea with method exercises to train the ability and sensitivity to Storytelling, educating the gaze to the world around us.
LESSON 2/3 – Exercises, Method, and Image Selection: This session continues what was learned in previous sessions and expands on the acquired knowledge with additional exercises and contexts. Each participant is asked to contribute to the discussion and, based on their skills, is assigned a personal photographic narrative project.
LESSON 4 (Individual) – Individual review of the project.
LESSON 5 – Presentation and discussion of the completed projects.
