Massimo Russo

Documentary Photographer

I seek the ordinariness of the everyday — that ordinariness which reveals itself as extraordinary to the eyes of those disposed to understand it.

Documentary photographer based in Rome.
His work spans documentary, environmental portraiture and storytelling, moving across vastly different contexts — reportage, religious rituals, street photography, urban spaces — whilst never losing sight of people and what connects them to one another.

His practice is grounded in unobtrusive presence and time given to observation: an approach that allows him to build authentic narratives, where the use of colour, light and composition work to reinforce the meaning of the images without overpowering it.

Since 2015 he has combined his personal research with an established professional practice. He shoots weddings, communions and baptisms, documenting events with a natural eye and attention to detail. He collaborates with businesses, cultural organisations and event planners to produce photographic content for communication purposes. He works as a production still photographer for theatre, and undertakes editorial projects and photobooks for private clients.

His training developed through attendance at photography schools and workshops with photographers of international standing. A passion for street photography has helped shape his eye and his way of observing the world. An enduring interest in visual storytelling and documentary photography continues to fuel both his personal and professional work.
