Night falls slowly over the savanna of central Togo. In the village, not far from Sokod\u00e9, the crackling of the bonfire blends with the hypnotic rhythm of the drums. The men of the Tem people gather around the flames. They are not putting on a show, even though many villagers have already gathered: they are renewing a ritual that has belonged to their community for generations. <\/p>\n\n

One after another, the initiates enter the circle. They pick up burning embers with bare hands, rubbing them on their chest, arms, and face as if they were harmless objects. Then they bring them to their mouths, bite them, hold them between their lips while the flame keeps burning. No grimace of pain appears on their faces, and no burn marks seem to show on their skin. For me, watching, it is an experience that defies all logic. <\/p>\n\n

There are many interpretations. Some speak of extraordinary mastery of the body, others point to ritual trance, others attribute it all to the protection of fetishes and the spiritual power passed down from the ancestors. Perhaps the ceremony lives precisely in the balance between these elements, where technique, faith, and tradition become inseparable. <\/p>\n\n

The ritual, however, also has an origin deeply tied to the land. The region is characterized by savanna, where during the dry season fires are frequent and traditional dwellings, built with plant materials, can easily be attacked by flames. Over time, becoming familiar with fire has also served as a form of preparation for facing emergencies and giving aid without being paralyzed by fear. <\/p>\n\n

As the drums continue to mark the rhythm of the ceremony, the audience follows every gesture in silence, broken only by shouts of encouragement. For the people of Sokod\u00e9, the meaning of the ritual goes well beyond its dramatic effect: it is a cultural heritage that strengthens the community’s identity and passes on to the younger generations a knowledge that belongs to their history. <\/p>\n\n

Watching this ceremony means accepting that not everything necessarily needs an immediate explanation. Some rituals do not ask to be deciphered, but to be understood within the cultural context that gave rise to them. And this is perhaps their most authentic teaching. <\/p>\n\n
